A Special Constable of Police has been implicated in a robbery ring
that involved the use of a car stolen from the Customs and Trade
Administration compound on Main Street.

The ring was cracked early Sunday morning when police recovered the
car on Middle Street, while the Constable and at least two of his
accomplices were sporting in a nearby night spot.
Another man was found sleeping in the vehicle and Kaieteur News
understands that a thorough search unearthed a firearm and some
housebreaking implements.
This newspaper understands that the Special Constable may have been
the mastermind of the operation since it is alleged that he was the
person who would normally provide the vehicle during the nights and
return it before daybreak.
According to reports, the special constable was previously deployed on
security detail at Customs House on Main Street where the car is
usually parked.
Customs House staff first became suspicious a few weeks ago when the
driver of the vehicle observed one morning that the fuel gauge was
lower than when he parked the vehicle the previous night.
In addition, the vehicle was not parked the way he had left it.
Their suspicions that the Special Constable may have been responsible
were aroused when they subsequently learnt that he was not at his post
the very night when his superiors visited the location.
The rank was then transferred to another location, Guyana Elections
Commission, but he had apparently put systems in place to continue to
access the car at nights.
On Saturday night a female Constable on duty reported that she saw him
outside Customs House acting in a suspicious manner, while the car was
parked in the compound.
A few minutes later the female guard heard the engine of the car and
saw the Constable driving it away.
She immediately called Impact after and reported the matter to her
superiors. A search was launched.
The search led them to Middle Street outside the parade ground, where
a man was seen sleeping in the vehicle. When questioned, the man
identified his accomplices.
Kaieteur News understands that the men would conceal the GRA sign on
the vehicle by covering it with cardboard whenever they were on the
prowl.
Investigators have been told that the car may have been used on
several occasions to commit criminal acts as far as Timehri, East Bank
Demerara.
